The multizone isolation packer (AZIP 1-1) uses patented Saltel Xpandable steel technology. Xpandable steel principle consists of the permanent and controlled deformation of a metallic sleeve covered with sealing arrangements.
Hydraulic pressure expands the packer (up to 30%). The sleeve has the ability to conform to the actual shape of the well. Some necessary overpressure energizes the sealing system against the borehole. In consequence, this skin energizing a permanent seal.
There is no need to trap fluid or pressure inside the packer. The packer sleeve gets its remarkable pressure rating from the dual-compensation system.
The dual compensation system
Firstly the multizone isolation packer comes with a unique system of compensation valves. In other words these valves balance the pressures acting on the packer and provide a dynamic isolation function. Likewise, the highest pressure, wherever it is coming from, can enter the packer’s chamber and acts to enforce the sealing performance. As a result, the compensation can give a life-of-well differential service pressure rating up to 15,000psi across the element on both sides.
Multizone isolation packer vs ovalized boreholes
Secondly the multizone isolation packer is designed to seal the annulus in difficult open hole conditions. It has indeed completed high standard qualifications to provide an effective sealing in boreholes up to 9% ovality.
The AZIP 1-1 maintains sealing performance in all well conditions, during stimulation and production, regardless of temperature variations.
Thirdly, the pressure compensation system perfectly fits intelligent completions with selective production from multiple zones. The multizone isolation packer will adapt to the changing environment along the well and reservoir’s life.
Qualified under ISO14310 V3 / API19OH V1 standards, the AZIP 1-1 can seal annular sections in cased and open hole conditions. The packer can hold up to 15,000 psi pressure reversals in HPHT environments.
The packer also provides up to 200 klbs axial load capacity.
