Corroded casing repair in a mature (1947) gas well – Texas, USA

Context

Gas well drilled in 1947
Highly corroded casing
7in - 20 lbs/ft - Ø 6.456in

Gas flowing wells in the Texas Hugoton field have a very low bottom-hole pressure. A casing leak above can release fluid into the reservoir, causing a rapid loss of the well.

Solution

Due to the irregular casing surface, Saltel Industries developed a customized 7in patch, including swellable rubber, to guarantee a good sealing, and a proper well casing repair. In addition, calculations on casing performance based on the remaining wall thickness led to adapt the setting procedure by limiting the overpressure applied onto the casing to energize the sealing elements. The patch was set in 12steps and 2h20 and drifted at 5.9in.
